Attachment & Detachment: Psychological Theory vs Spirituality

In this podcast episode, I explore a word thrown around a lot in psychology and spirituality circles: attachment and detachment. Attachment in the discourse of psychology comes from attachment theory, which refers to the structure of one’s relationship to others. Broadly, attachment denotes this structure of relating to others: secure or insecure. Looking through the lens of attachment theory, it is important to understand whether you are insecurely or securely attached in order foster healthy relationships with others. Conversely, in the realm of spirituality, attachment is about the way one is bound to someone or something. This type of attachment is what is spoken of that leads to suffering, or in Buddhism, what is called samsara.
